ROBERT FINELL NEWBERRY was born to Samuel and Bethia Brannon Begley ca 1778 in Montgomery County, Virginia. He was their second child and second son.

He grew up at Newberry’s Run Farm

Esther Powers , born ca 1773, was the daughter of Jonas and Jerusha Harmon Powers. She was  probably born in Fincastle County (later Montgomery and then Wythe Counties). She was one of three sisters to marry sons of Samuel and Bethia.

However I did find that when William died on June 7, 1891, Mary Josephine was the administrator of his estate.  I have chosen to go with her as the correct mother of the children born between 1883 and 1891.

Son,  Robert James Arthur Newberry enlisted on March 31, 1862 at Weatherford in Parker County TX. He served as a private with Buford’s Regiment of Major General Marmaduke’s Cavalry Regiment. This regiment fought in the Trans-Mississippi Department and  in the Red River Campaign.

Grandson, David Forrester Stallard, s/o John Hutchinson and Nancy Eunice Newberry, served with the Confederacy according to a pension application filed by his widow on December 29, 1909. No regimental details provided.

In general, it is safe to assume that a high percentage of men born between 1825 and 1845 fought in the Civil War on one side or the other. All too often, their service and regimental information is either not known or not included – or is listed in such a non-specific way that it can’t be trusted to apply to the correct man. Let’s just say that was a terrible time for every American man, woman and child and that everyone who survived was a veteran of something by the time it was over.

Great-grandson, Benjamin Franklin Hillman was born to James and Nancy Elizabeth Stallard on August 2, 1862 in Wise County VA. He married Nancy Susannah Greear on January 17, 1883 in Wise County. Six children noted. One ancestry.com entry states that the automobile he was riding in was struck at a crossing by a passenger train on June 27, 1927. He died about 2 weeks later at a hospital in Tazewell County.

A second marriage to Rebekah Blankenship with children born in the same time frame is documented in ancestry.com. The first child born was to Isabell in Texas, the second within the year to Rebekah in Missouri etc until 1871. By the 1880 census, Isabell was married to someone else, so I’m thinking she found out about the other wife and family and got a divorce. There’s nothing further about Rebekah at all. Isabel, born 1848, was the daughter of William Harvey and Rebecca Martin Forgay. Rebekah is said to have been born in 1845. Nothing further found about her. This bad boy (William R Newberry) died in Oklahoma City in 1910.

Grandson, 26 y/o John H Riggs, s/o Reuben and Thersia Newberry, married Lucretia Pritchett ca 1868. They had four children between 1869 and 1878.

Great-grandson, Emmett Walter Newberry was born to William R and Isabell Forgay in March 1868, He married Jennie Lee Colyer Jackson Strong in 1893. Seven children noted.

Great-granddaughter, Frances Elizabeth Stallard was born to Cyrus Henderson Jr and Margaret Addington ca 1868 in Virginia. Nothing further found.

Great-granddaughter, Martha Priscilla Davis was born to Robert and Hester Stallard on January 12, 1868 in Virginia. She married James Mathias Ingle on August 11, 1887 in Wise County. Three children were born before her death in 1891 at Possum Hollow in Wise County.

Great-grandson, Israel Nathan Stallard was born to John Bunyan and Mary McLaughlin on September 25, 1868 in Wise County VA. He married Venettia Tucker ca 1889 in Missouri. Five children noted.

Great-grandson, Samuel Benton Stallard was born to Harmon Benton and Sarah Casteel on August 29, 1868 in Virginia. He married Martha Jane Rose on December 7, 1893 in Dickinson County VA. Nine children noted.

Great-granddaughter, Caroline Paulina Lane was born to Jesse Joel and Cassandra Elizabeth LNU ca 1868 in Pulaski County MO. She was with her parents at the time of the 1880 census for Saint James in Pulaski County. Nothing further found.

Great-granddaughter, Marilla Ann Smith was born to Daniel and Susan Newberry on June 27, 1868 in Jasper County, Iowa. She married George Harry Augustus Agnew on May 3, 1897 in South Africa.

Great-granddaughters, Lucy Ethyl Newberry was born to James Robert and Sarah Davis ca 1868 in Laclede County MO.  Nothing further found.

Great-grandson, Charles Wesly Sumner was born to Benjamin and Sarah Jane Newberry on January 23, 1868   in Missouri. He married Ada Lee Boothe ca 1901 in either Missouri or California.  Four children noted. They were at Woodland in Yolo County CA by 1910 but back in Oklahoma at the time of his death on January 7, 1947.

Great-granddaughter, Louvinica Jane Lane was born to Thomas and Mary E Riggs on January 21, 1868 in Camden County MO. She married Nathaniel Harvey Archer ca 1899 (1 child) and (after his death in 1903), FNU Simpson ca 1905 (2 children). They were at Blanket in Brown County TX by 1910.

Great-grandson, Henry Charles Newberry was born to Ivy Walker and Amy Charles ca 1868 in Laclede MO. He married Effie LNU ca 1889 in Missouri or Texas. No children noted.

Grandson, 38 y/o David Forrester Stallard, d/o John and Nancy Eunice Newberry, according to a Civil War Confederate pension application dated 12/29/1909 in Wise County, married Malinda A LNU on April 19, 1869. They had one child

Granddaughter, 16 y/o Amanda V Newberry, d/o Henderson and Leutishia Bailey, married Samuel A Davis on July 6, 1869 in Laclede County MO. Four children noted. They were at Bearhouse in Ashley County, Arkansas by 1900.

Great-grandson, Jeremiah Lawson Stallard was born to Hazelton and Susannah Lawson in September 1869 in Wise County VA. He married Mary Florence Derefield in March 1885. No children noted. No children noted. He was the last child for the couple.

Great-grandson, Robert Thompson Davis Jr, born September 1869 in Virginia, was the last child for Robert Thompson and Hester Ann Stallard Davis. He married Sarah Elizabeth Robinette on December 27, 1888 in Wise County.  Four children born before his death in 1897.

Great-grandson, James Robert Holbrook was born to Covey and Frances Stallard on December 18, 1869 in Wise County VA. He died on September 6, 1887 in Wise County at age 18.

Great-grandson, Jeptha Long was born to Milton and Catherine Caroline Brown at Grubville in Jefferson County MO on January 7, 1869. He married Frances Jane Johnson on November 19, 1890 in Jefferson County. Ten children noted. Jeptha was the last child for Milton and Caroline Catherine Brown Long.

Great-granddaughter, Mary E Newberry was born to James Robert and Sarah E Davis in July 1969 in Laclede County MO. She married William T Wright on February 2, 1886 in LaClede County. Ten children noted.

Great-grandson, Jasper Newton Newberry was born to William R and Rebekah Blankenship ca 1869 in Laclede County MO. He married Sarah Jane Price ca 1900 in Missouri or Oklahoma. Seven children noted. They were in Oklahoma by 1910 and in Tulare County CA by 1920.

Great-granddaughter, Sarah Sumner was born to Benjamin and Sarah Jane Newberry ca 1869 in Missouri. Nothing further found.

Great-grandson, Harvey W Riggs was born to John and Lucretia Pritchett ca 1869 in Missouri.  Nothing further found.

Great-granddaughter, Ada McComas was born to John Thomas and Mahala Newberry on August 23, 1869 at Buffalo Gap in Taylor County TX. No marriage found. Ada died at Las Cruces in Dona Ana County, New Mexico on April 6 1953.

Grandson, Richard Carroll Newberry, s/o Cyrus and Senna Broadwater  married Sarah Piney Nicks on February 28, 1880 in Howell County. They produced 8 children between 1882 and 1899.

Great-Grandson, John Alfred Newberry s/o Richard Carroll and Sarah Piney Nicks was born on November 30, 1889. He married Emma Jane Andrews. He died on September 4, 1964.

Great-Great-Grandson, James Floyd Newberry, s/o John Alfred and Emma Jane Andrews, was born on October 17, 1923. He married Violet Alice Dougherty. He died on November 11, 2008.
