Bernard the Dane was a Viking jarl (earl) of Danish origins. He had put himself in the service of Rollo the Viking (who was installed at the mouth of the Seine) at some point before the year 0911. Bernard converted to Christianity at Rouen ca 0912 and, shortly afterward, received from Rollo the county of Pont Audemer in Roumois (which was later renamed ‘Harcourt’). He is believed to have been the ancestor of two great Anglo-Norman families, the Beaumonts and the Harcourts.

AT LEAST ONE CHILD WAS BORN TO THE MARRIAGE

TORF de HARCOURTwas born ca 0920 at Pont Audemer in Normandy. His father was Bernard the Dane. His mother was Sprote de Bourgogne de Harcourt. He married Ertemberge de Brioquibec. He died ca 1010.

Count Herbert was the son of Pepin of Vermandois. He became count of Soissons before 0889. A contemporary of Baldwin II, Count of Flanders, he had the advantage of being a Carolingian aristocrat. He was a great-grandson of Pepin of Italy (a son of Charlemagne). Herbert controlled both St. Quentin and Peronne. His activities in the upper Somme river valley, such as the capture and murder of his brother Raoul in 896, may have caused Baldwin II to have him assassinated in the year 0907.

PEPIN II QUENTIN, Count Vermandois, Lord of Senlis and San Quentin. He was born ca 0817. His father was Bernard, King of Italy. His mother was Cunigunda of Laon. He married a Lady of the Vexin family. He died ca 0848 at Milan, Lombardy Italy

Bernard plotted against his uncle, Emperor Louis the Pious, when Louis made Bernard a vassal of his cousin Lothair. When his plot was discovered, Louis had him blinded, a procedure which killed him

PEPIN was the second son of Charlemagne. His mother was Hildegard of Vinzgau. He was born ‘Carlomon, but was rechristened with the royal name ‘Pepin’ when he was a young child. He

was made King of Italy after his father’s conquest of the Lombards in 781 and was crowned by Pope Hadrian with the Iron Crown of Lombardy.

He was active as ruler of Lombardy and worked to expand the Frankish empire. In 0791, he marched a Lombard army into the Drava valley and ravaged Pannonia while his father marched along the Danube (river) into Avars territory. Charlemagne left the campaigning to deal with a Saxon revolt in 792. Pepin and Duke Eric of Friuli continued to assault the Avars’ ring shaped strongholds. The great Ring of The Avars, the capital fortress was taken twice. The booty was sent to Charlemagne in Aachen and redistributed to all his followers and even to foreign rules, including Offa of Mercia.

CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, Holy Roman Emperor. He was born on April 2, 0742. His father was Pepin the Short. His mother was Bertrada of Laon. He married 1/Desiderata of the Lombards (770-771) 2/Hildegarde of the Vinzgau (771-783) 3/Fastrada (783-794) and 4/ Luitgard (794-800). There were also numerous mistresses and concubines…..He died on January 28, 0814 at Aachen of Pleurisy at age 72.

Charlemagne’s exact birthplace is unknown, although historians have suggested Liege in present-day Belgium and Aachen in modern-day Germany as possible locations. Little is known about his childhood and education, although as an adult, he displayed a talent for languages and could speak Latin and understand Greek, among other languages.  Einhard, a Frankish scholar and contemporary of Charlemagne, wrote a biography of the emperor after his death. In the work, titled Vita Karoli Magni (Life of Charles the Great), he described Charlemagne as “broad and strong in the form of his body and exceptionally tall without, however, exceeding an appropriate measure. His appearance was impressive whether he was sitting or standing despite having a neck that was fat and too short, and a large belly.”

Once in power, Charlemagne sought to unite all the Germanic peoples into one kingdom, and convert his subjects to Christianity. In order to carry out this mission, he spent the majority of his reign engaged in military campaigns. Soon after becoming king, he conquered the Lombards (present-day northern Italy), the Avars (in modern-day Austria and Hungary) and Bavaria.

In his role as a zealous defender of Christianity, Charlemagne gave money and land to the Christian church and protected the popes. As a way to acknowledge Charlemagne’s power and reinforce his relationship with the church, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor of the Romans on December 25, 800, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

PEPIN THE SHORT, King of the Franks was born ca 0714 at Jupile, near the city of Liege in modern Belgium. His father was Charles Martel. His mother was Rotrude of Treves. He married Bertrada of Laon ca 0750. He died ca 768

Pepin the Short was the first of the Carolingians to become a king. The younger son of the Frankish prince, Pepin upbringing was distinguished by the ecclesiastical education he received from the mons of Basilica of St Denis.

Succeeding his father as the Mayor of the Palace in 0741, Pepin the Short reigned over Francia jointly with his elder brother, Carloman. Pepin ruled in Neustria, Burgundy and Provence, while Carloman established himself in Austrasia, Alemannia and Thuringia.

The brothers were active in suppressing revolts led by the Bavarians, Aquitanians, Saxons and the Alemanni in the early years of their reigns. In 743, they ended the Frankish interregnum by choosing Childeric III, who was to be the last Merovingian monarch, as figurehead King of the Franks.

CHARLES MARTEL, Duke and Prince of the Franks, Mayor of the Palace. He was born ca 0688 at Herstal in Belgium. His father was Pepin of Herstal. His mother was Alpaida of Aupoi. He married Rotrude of Aupoi. He died on October 22, 0741

Charles Martel was a Frankish statesman and military leader who, as Mayor of the Palace, was the defacto rules of Francia from 718 until his death. He successfully asserted his claims to power as successor to his father as the power behind the throne in Frankish politics. Continuing and building on his father’s work, he restored centralized government in Francia and Began the series of Military that re-established the Franks as the undisputed masters of all Gaul.

PEPIN OF HERSTAL, Duke and Prince of the Franks, Mayor of the Palace for Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy. He was born ca 0635 at Herstal in Liege Belgium. His father was Ansegisus von Metz. His mother was Begga von Metz. He married 2/Alphaide of Aupoi. He died ca 0704

The son of the powerful Frankish statesman, Pepin worked to establish his family, (the Pippinids) as the strongest in France. He was able to realise his dreams by becoming Mayor of the Palace in 680. Pepin subsequently embarked on several wars to expand his power. He united all the

Frankish realms by the conquests of Neustria and Burgundy in 1687. In foreign conflicts, Pepin increased the power of the Franks by his subjugation of Alemanni the Frisians and the Franconians. He also began the process of evangelization in Germany.

Under Merovingian dynasty, the mayor of the palace was the manager of the household of the Frankish kings and wielded real and effective power to make decisions affecting the kingdom. The office existed from the sixth century and during the seventh it evolved into the power behind the throne in the northeastern kingdom of Austrasia. In 0751, the mayor of the palace, Pepin the Short, orchestrated the deposition of the king, Childeric III, and was crowned in his place.

ANSEGISEL von METZ was born ca 0606. His father was Arnulf van Metz. His mother was Doda van Andenne. He married Begga van Herstal. Several death dates are noted for him

Ansegisel served King Sigebert III of Austrasia from 634 until 656. Through his son, Pepin of Herstal, Ansegisel’s descendants would eventually become Frankish Kings and rule over the Carolingian empire.

Saint ARNULF van METZ, Bishop of Metz, was born ca 0582 near Nancy in Lorraine. His father’s name is not proven. His mother’s name is not proven. He married Doda van Andenne ca 0596. He died ca 0640 and was later canonized. Arnulf gave distinguished service at the Austrasian (Merovingian) court under Theudebert II. He distinguished himself both as a military commander and in the civil administration; at one time he had under his care six distinct provinces.

In later life, Arnulf was tormented by the violence that surrounded him and feared that he had played a role in the wars and murders that plagued the ruling families. Obsessed by these sins, Arnulf went to a bridge over the Moselle river. There he took off his bishop’s ring and threw it into the river, praying to God to give him a sign of absolution by returning the ring to him. Many penitent years later, a fisherman brought to the bishop’s kitchen a fish in the stomach of which was found the bishop’s ring. Arnulf repaid the sign of God by immediately retiring as bishop and becoming a hermit for the remainder of his life.

Hildegard died on 30 April 0783 from the after effects of her last childbirth. She was buried on May 1, 0783 in the Abbey_of_Saint-Arnoulda. She was 29 years of age.

An intense physical relationship between the spouses was demonstrated by the fact that, during her 12 years of marriage, Hildegard had 8 pregnancies (including one set of twins) and remarkably chronicles never mentioned either miscarriages or stillbirths. She accompanied Charlemagne on many of his military campaigns: she gave birth to her second child and first daughter, Adelaide, during the siege of Pavia, capital of the kingdom of the Lombards. (September 773/June 774), but the child died during the return journey to France. In 778, Hildegard accompanied her husband as far as Aquitaine, where she gave birth to twins Louis and Lothair.  In 780/781 she traveled with Charlemagne and four of their children to Rome, where the sons Louis and Carloman (renamed Pepin) were appointed sub-kings of Aquitaine and Italy, respectively. This contributed to the strengthening of the alliance between the Carolingians and the Papacy.

Pepin and Bertrada became King and Queen of the Franks in 0751, following Pepin’s successful coup against the Frankish Merovingian monarchs. After Pepin’s death in 768, Bertrada lost her title as Queen of the Franks when Charlemagne and Carloman inherited the two halves of Pepin’s kingdom. Bertrada stayed at the court and often tried to stop arguments between the two brothers. Some historians credit Bertrada’s support for her elder son Charlemagne over her younger son Carloman and her diplomatic skills for Charlemagne’s early success. Although her influence over Charlemagne may have diminished in time, she lived at his court, and, according to Einhard their relationship was excellent. Bertrada recommended that Charlemagne set aside his legal wife, Himiltrude and marry Desiderata of the Lombards. He did so but soon divorced her and married Hildegarde. Einhard claims this was the only episode that ever strained the relations between mother and son.

The mother of Pepin the Short was ROTRUDE OF HESBAY (aka Rotrude of Treves). She was born ca 0694. Her father may have been Lambert of Hesbaye. Her mother may have been Chrotlind.  She married Charles Martel. She died ca 0724 in Picardy at age 30.

The mother of Pepin of Herstal was Saint BEGGA von HERSTAL. She was born ca 0615. Her father was Pepin of Landen. Her mother was Ida of Nivelles. She married Ansegisel von Metz. She died ca 693.

On the death of her husband in 691 in a hunting accident, BEGGA took the veil and made a pilgrimage to Rome. Returning, she founded seven churches and a convent at Andenne, near Namur, Belgium. The first nuns came from Nivelles and introduced Irish monastic customs. Begga’s remains are preserved at Andenne; her vita was written in the late 11th century. She is invoked for the cure of hernias and of infants’ diseases.

Some notes

December 2018

Hello, my Newberries –
Yes, I am fully aware that knowing we are descended from Kings and other illustrious beings and $5.00 will probably get us a decent cup of coffee somewhere! I have to say, though,  that I’ve had fun digging for these treasures online. I hope you enjoy my work and that it makes you curious enough to dig for more about these very real people who lived their lives so long ago.

The Families of our Ancient Wives and Mothers series  begins with Sprote de Bourgogne and ends with Matilda de Glastonia because the information becomes either sketchy or non-existent at that point in time. In fact, the surnames of the next six more contemporary wives are not documented at all. The marriage records of these couples may – or may not – have been lost during the destruction of church records in the reign of Henry VIII.

She married Ralph de Toeni de Conches. She died ca 1147.   Orderic Vitalis calls her “Isabel de Conches”, says she was “generous, daring and gay” but “in war she rode armed as a knight among the knights”, and recounts that Helvise Comtess d’Evreux was offended by her “slighting remarks” which led to a bitter war between their husbands. After her husband died, she repented “the mortal sin of luxury in which she had indulged in her youth” and became a nun at Haute-Bruyère.

THE MATERNAL LINES

ADELISE OF NORTHUMBRIA was the Mother of Godehildis. She was born ca 1085 at Clifford Castle in Hertfordshire, England. Her father was Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria. Her mother was Judith of Lens, Countess of Huntingdon. She married Ralph VI/Raoul II de Toeni de Conches. She died ca 1126 at Flamstead, Hertfordshire, England.

WALTHEOF, 1st Earl of Northumbria was the Father of Adelise of Northumbria. His birth year is not noted. He was the son of Seward, Earl of Northumbria.  His mother was Alfflaled of Bernicia. He married Judith of Lens, Countess of Huntingdon.  He was beheaded on October 31, 1076.

Waltheof was the last of the Anglo-Saxon earls and the only English aristocrat to be executed during the reign of William I He was the second son of Siward, Earl of Northumbria. His mother was Aelfflaed, daughter of Ealdred, Earl of Bernicia. In 1054, Waltheof’s brother, Osbearn was killed in battle making Waltheof his father’s heir.

Waltheof was said to be devout and charitable and was probably educated for a monastic life. Around 1065, however, he became an earl, governing Northamptonshire and Huntingdonshire. Following the Battle of Hastings he submitted to William and was allowed to keep his pre-Conquest title and possessions. He remained at William’s court until 1068.

When Sweyn II invaded Northern England in 1069, Waltheof and Edgar Aetheling joined the Danes and took part in the attack on York. He would again make a fresh submission to William after the departure of the invaders in 1070. He was restored to his earldom, and went on to marry William’s niece, Judith of Lens. In 1072, he was appointed Earl of Northampton.

In 1075 Waltheof joined the Revolt of the Earls against William. His motives for taking part in the revolt are unclear, as is the depth of his involvement. However he repented, confessing his guilt first to Archbishop Lanfranc and then in person to William, who was at the time in Normandy. He returned to England with William but was arrested, brought twice before the king’s court and sentenced to death.

He spent almost a year in confinement before being beheaded on 31 May 1076 at St. Giles’s Hill, near Winchester. He was said to have spent the months of his captivity in prayer and fasting. Many people believed in his innocence and were surprised when the execution was carried out. His body was initially thrown into a ditch, but was later retrieved and buried in the chapter house of Crowland Abbey in Lincolnshire.

SIWARD, Earl of Northumbria was the father of Waltheof.  His birth year is not documented. The name of his father is not clearly documented. The name of his mother is not clearly documented. He married Alfflaled of Bernicia He died ca 1055.

Siward was probably of Scandinavian origin, perhaps a relative of Earl Ulf, and emerged as a powerful regional strongman in England during the reign of Cnut (“Canute the Great” (who ruled from 1016 to 1035). Cnut was a Scandinavian ruler who conquered England in the 1010s, and Siward was one of the many Scandinavians who came to England in the aftermath of that conquest. Siward subsequently rose to become sub-ruler of most of northern England. From 1033 at the latest Siward was in control of southern Northumbria, that is, present-day Yorkshire, governing as earl on Cnut’s behalf.

He entrenched his position in northern England by marrying Ælfflæd, the daughter of EaldredEarl of Bamburgh. After killing Ealdred’s successor Eadulf in 1041, Siward gained control of all Northumbria. He exerted his power in support of Cnut’s successors, (kings Harthacnut and Edward), assisting them with vital military aid and counsel. He probably gained control of the middle shires of Northampton and Huntingdon by the 1050s, and there is some evidence that he spread Northumbrian control into Cumberland. In the early 1050s Earl Siward turned against the Scottish king Mac Bethad Findlaích (“Macbeth”). Despite the death of his son Osbjorn, Siward defeated Mac in battle in 1054. More than half a millennium later the adventure in Scotland earned him a place in William Shakespeare‘s Macbeth. Siward died in 1055, leaving one son, Waltheof, who would eventually succeed to Northumbria.

JUDITH de LENS was the Mother of Adelise of Northumbria ….. Title: Countess of Huntingdon. She was born ca 1054 at Lens, Artois, in the Flemish region of the Holy Roman Empire. Her father was Lambert II, Count of Lens. Her mother was Adelaide of Normandy, Countess of Aumale. She married Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria. She died ca 1086 at Lens, Artois, France.

ADELAIDE of NORMANDY was the mother of Judith de Lens.  Title: Comtesse de Aumale.  She was born ca 1029/30  at  Falaise, Calvados, Basse-Normandie. Her father was Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy.  Her mother may or may not have been Herleva of Falaise.  Her brother or half-brother was William the Conqueror. She married 2/ Lambert II, Count of Lens. She was deceased by 1090.

Adelaide of Normandy was the sister or half-sister of William the Conqueror and was Countess of Aumale in her own right, (being the  illegitimate daughter of the Norman duke Robert the Magnificent). Adelaide’s first marriage to Enguerrand II, Count of Ponthieu  was annulled ca 1049/50 and another marriage was arranged for her, this time to Lambert II, Count of Lens.  Lambert was killed in 1054 at Lille. In 1060 she was called upon again to form another marital alliance, this time to a younger man Odo, Count of Champagne. Odo seems to have been something of a disappointment as he appears on only one of the Conqueror’s charters and received no land in England; his wife being a tenant-in-chief in her own right

In 1082, William and his wife, Matilda, gave to the abbey of the Holy Trinity in Caen the town of Le Homme in the Cotentin with a provision to the Countess of Albamarla (Aumale), his sister, for a life tenancy. In 1086, as Comitissa de Albatnarla, as she was listed in the Domesday Book, was shown as having numerous holdings in both Suffolk and Essex;  one of the very few Norman noblewomen to have held lands in England at Domesday as a tenant-in-chief. She was also given the lordship of Holderness which was held after her death by her 3rd husband, Odo, the by then disinherited Count of Champagne; the lordship then passed to their son, Stephen. Adelaide died before 1090.

HERLEVA of FALAISE may or may not have been the mother of Adelaide of Normandy.  She was born ca 1003 at Falaise, Calvados, Lower Normandy. Her father was Fulbert of Falaise. Her mother was Doda of Falaise. She was the concubine of Robert I, The Magnificent, Duke of Normandy. She later married Herluin, Comte de Conteville. She died ca 1050 at Eure in Upper Normandy.

Herleva became the mistress of Robert, Duke of Normandy. In 1028, they had a son who eventually became known as William, Duke of Normandy. One story goes that instead of marrying Herleva, Robert persuaded her to marry his friend, Herluin of Conteville. After marriage, Herleva had three more children, Odo, Robert and Muriel. Later the sons became known as Odo of Bayeux and Robert of Mortain.

DODA de FALAISE was the mother of Herleva. She may have been born ca 0980. The name of her father is not documented. The name of her mother is not documented. She married Fulbert of Falaise. Her death date is not documented.

No reliable information exists about Fulbert and Doda of Falaise. He may well have been a tanner by trade.

The Families of our Ancient Wives and Mothers: MARGUERITE du PERCHE

Marguerite du Perche was born ca 1075 Title: Countess of Warwick…..Her father as Geoffroi du Perche, Seigneur de Nogent-le-Rotrou ….. Her mother was Beatrice de Roucy …..She married Henri I de Beaumont-le-Roger, first earl of Warwick in England ….. She died ca 1137

Both Henry and his widow, Marguerite, enjoyed a high reputation for piety and virtue. After his death and ca 1125, Marguerite  witnessed the foundation charter of the Hermitage of Notre-Dame-du-Désert by Robert, Earl of Leicester (her brother-in-law). She was a benefactor of Kenilworth Priory and the Knights Templars, and consented to a gift by her son Robert to the Abbey of Le Bec. She was living in 1156.

MARGUERITE MARRIED

Henri I de Beaumont-le-Roger ….. Title: first English Earl of Warwick ….. He was born ca 1045 at Casatle Neuborough Normandy ….. His father was Rogerde Beaumont-le-Roger ….. His mother as Adeline de Meulan-Sur-Seine ….. He married Marguerite du Perche ….. He died ca June 20, 1119 at Abbey Preaux, Ponte Audemer Normandy

Henry de Beaumont, (alias de Newburgh), 1st Earl of Warwick was a Norman nobleman who rose to great prominence in England. He was a younger son of Roger de Beaumont by Adeline of Meulan, daughter of Waleran III, Count of Meulan, and Oda de Conteville  He was given by his father the modest lordship of Le Neubourg, in central Normandy, 12 km NE of his father’s caput of Beaumont-le-Roger on the River Risle. From this lordship he adopted for himself and his descendants the surname Anglicised to “de Newburgh”    Little is in fact known of his career before 1088. However he took a leading role in reconciling William the Conqueror with his eldest son Robert Curthose in 1081 so he stood high in the Conqueror’s favour. In 1088 he was a royal agent in the arrest and trial of the traitorous bishop of Durham, William de Saint-Calais.

In due course he acquired a much greater land-holding in England when, in reward for help in suppressing the Rebellion of 1088King William II made him Earl of Warwick in 1088. The lands of the earldom were put together from several sources. The bulk was provided by the majority of the lands in Warwickshire and elsewhere recorded as those of his elder brother Robert, Count of Meulan in the Domesday Survey of 1086. He also received large royal estates in Rutland and the royal forest of Sutton, which became Sutton Chase. The complicated arrangement to endow his earldom is unprecedented, and must have been the result of a three way arrangement between his father, his brother and the king.

Nithard was born sometime around the year Charlemagne was crowned Imperator Augustus in December 800. He was probably raised either at the imperial palace, where his mother continued to live until the death of the emperor, or at the monastery of St. Riquier, where his father was lay abbot. He would have been educated most likely at the imperial schola, which offered the kind of high-quality instruction in both military and literary training he is known to have received.

Nithard himself later became lay abbot of St Riquier in commendam. He served his cousin Charles the Bald in both war and peace, carrying out two missions to Lothar during the Carolingian civil war and fighting at Fontenoy in June 0841. It is probable that he died as the result of wounds received whilst fighting for him against the Northmen near Angoulême. The date of his death is disputed among scholars, but consensus is now for June 14, 0844. In the 11th century his body, with the fatal wound still visible, was found in the grave of his father, Angilbert.

The father of Nithard the Chronicler was ANGILBERT de PONTHIEU ….. Title: Saint ….. He was born ca 0760 ….. The name of his father is not documented ….. The name of his mother is not documented ….. He He married Berthe (Berta) a daughter of Charlemagne ….. He died on February 18, 0814 at Aachen

Saint Angilbert , (sometimes known as Angilberk or Engelbert), was a noble Frankish poet who was educated under Alcuin and served Charlemagne as a secretary, diplomat, and son-in-law. He was venerated as a pre-Congregation saint and is still honored on the day of his death.

Angilbert seems to have been brought up at the court of Charlemagne at the palace school in Aquae Grani (Aachen). He was educated there as the pupil and then friend of the great English scholar Alcuin. When Charlemagne sent his young son Pepin to Italy as King of the Lombards,  Angilbert went along as  a high administrator of the satellite court. As the friend and adviser of Pepin, he assisted for a while in the government of Italy. Angilbert delivered the document on Iconoclasmfrom the Frankish Synod of Frankfurt to Pope Adrian I, and was later sent on three important embassies to the pope, in 792, 794, and 796. At one time, he served an officer of the maritime provinces. He accompanied Charlemagne to Rome in 800] and was one of the witnesses to his Will in 0811.

There are various traditions concerning Angilbert’s relationship with Bertha, daughter of Charlemagne. One holds that they were married, another that they were not. They had, however, at least two sons and one daughter, one of whom, Nithard, became a notable figure in the mid-9th century, and the daughter Bertha, went on to marry Helgaud II, count of Ponthieu. Control of marriage and the meanings of legitimacy were hotly contested in the Middle Ages. Bertha and Angilbert are an example of how resistance to the idea of a sacramental marriage could coincide with holding church offices. On the other hand, some historians have speculated that Charlemagne opposed formal marriages for his daughters out of concern for political rivalries from their potential husbands. None of Charlemagne’s daughters were married, despite political offers of arranged marriages.

Roger de Beaumont-Le-Roger ….. Title: Seigneur de Pontaudemer ….. He was born between 1015 and 1022 at Pont Audemer in Normandy ….. His father was Honfroi (Humphrey) de Vieilles ….. His mother was Auberee de la Haye ….. He married Adeline de Meulan ….. He died ca 1094 at Abbey Preaux in Normandy

Roger de Beaumont (the bearded), feudal lord (seigneur) of Beaumont-le-Roger and of Pont-Audemer in Normandy, was a powerful Norman nobleman and close advisor to William the Conqueror.

Planché described him as “the noblest, the wealthiest, and the most valiant seigneur of Normandy, and the greatest and most trusted friend of the Danish (i.e. Norman) family”. The explanation for his exalted position appears to be that as an older cousin who had never rebelled against the young Duke, he was part of the kinship group of noblemen that William relied upon in governing Normandy and fighting-off frequent rebellion and invasions. The historian Frank McLynn observed that William relied heavily on relatives on his mother’s side, namely his half-brothers Bishop Odo and Robert, and brothers-in-law, and on relatives descended from the Duchess Gunnora’s sisters, since his own paternal kin had proved unreliable.

Wace, the 12th-century historian, wrote that: “At the time of the invasion of England, Roger was summoned to the great council at Lillebonne on account of his wisdom; but he did not join in the expedition as he was too far advanced in years”. Although Roger could not fight, he did not hesitate in contributing a large share of the cost, and provided at his own expense sixty vessels for the conveyance of the troops across the channel. Furthermore, his eldest son and heir fought bravely at Hastings as noted in several contemporary records. As a result, Roger’s elder sons were rewarded generously with lands in England, and both eventually were made English earls by the sons of the Conqueror. Wace’s statement may therefore cast doubt on the possibility of Roger being depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry feasting at Hastings. However it is possible that he crossed the Channel so he could continue to act as a valued member of the Duke’s council, perhaps giving advice on military tactics, yet stayed well behind the line of battle at headquarters

In the work, titled “Vita Karoli Magni (Life of Charles the Great),” he described Charlemagne as “broad and strong in the form of his body and exceptionally tall without, however, exceeding an appropriate measure…His appearance was impressive whether he was sitting or standing despite having a neck that was fat and too short, and a large belly.”

Once in power, Charlemagne sought tounite all the Germanic peoples into one kingdom, and convert his subjects toChristianity. In order to carry out this mission, he spent the majority of hisreign engaged in military campaigns. Soon after becoming king, he conquered the Lombards (present-day northern Italy), the Avars (in modern-day Austria and Hungary) and Bavaria, among others.

The father of Charlemagne was PEPIN THE SHORT…..Title: King of the Franks…..He was born ca 0714 at Jupile, near the city of Liege in modern Belgium…..His father was Charles Martel…..His mother was Rotrude of Treves…..He married Bertrada of Laon ca 0750…..He died ca 768

Pepin the Short was the first of the Carolingians to become a king. The younger son of the Frankish prince Charles Martel and his wife Rotrude, Pepin’s upbringing was distinguished by the ecclesiastical education he had received from the monks of St. Denis.

Succeeding his father as the Mayor of the Palace in 0741, Pepin reigned over Francia jointly with his elder brother, Carloman.

The father of Pepin the Short was CHARLES MARTEL….Titles: Duke and Prince of the Franks, Mayor of the Palace…..He was born ca 0688 at Herstal in Belgium…..His father was Pepin of Herstal…..His mother was Alpaida of Aupoi…..He married Rotrude of Aupoi…..He died on October 22, 0741

Charles Martel was a Frankish statesman and military leader who, as Duke and Prince of the Franks and Mayor of the Palace, was the de facto ruler of Francia from 718 until his death. He was the the son of the Frankish statesman Pepin of Herstal and a noblewoman named Alpaida. Charles successfully asserted his claims to power as successor to his father as the power behind the throne in Frankish politics. Continuing and building on his father’s work, he restored centralized government in Francia and began the series of military campaigns that re-established the Franks as the undisputed masters of all Gaul.

The father of Charles Martel was PEPIN OF HERSTAL…..Titles: Duke and Prince of the Franks, Mayor of the Palace for Austrasia, Neustria and Burgundy (see below)…..He was born ca 0635 at Herstal in Liege Belgium…..His father was Ansegisus von Metz…..His mother was Begga von Metz…..He married 2/ Alphaide of Aupoi…..He died ca 0704

The son of the powerful Frankish statesman Ansegisel, Pepin worked to establish his family, (the Pippinids), as the strongest in France. He was able to realise his dreams by becoming Mayor of the Palace in Austrasia in680. Pepin subsequently embarked on several wars to expand his power. He united all the Frankish realms by the conquests of Neustria and Burgundy in 0687. In foreign conflicts, Pepin increased the power of the Franks by his subjugation of the Alemanni, the Frisians, and the Franconians. He also began the process of evangelization in Germany.

Under the Merovingian dynasty, the mayor of the palace or majordomo  was the manager of the household of the Frankish king and wielded real and effective power to make decisions affecting the kingdom. The office existed from the sixth century, and during the seventh it evolved into the “power behind the throne“in the northeastern kingdom of Austrasia. In 0751, the mayor of the palace, Pepin the Short, orchestrated the deposition of the king, Childeric III, and was crowned in his place.

The father of Pepin of Herstal was ANSEGISEL von METZ…..He was born ca 0606…..His father was Arnulf van Metz…..His mother was Doda van Andenne…..He married Begga van Herstal…..Several death dates are noted for him

Ansegisel served King Sigebert III of Austrasia from 634 until 656. Through his son Pepin de Herstal, Ansegisel’s descendants would eventually become Frankish kings and rule over the Carolingian Empire.

The father of Ansegisel von Metz was ARNULF van METZ…..Titles: Bishop of Metz, Saint…..He was born ca 0582 near Nancy in Lorraine…..His father’s name is not proven…..His mother’s name is not proven…..He married Doda van Andenne ca 0596. He died ca 0640 and was later canonized.

Arnulf van Metz was a Frankish Bishop of Metz and advisor to the Merovingian court of Austrasia. He was born to an important Frankish family near Nancy in Lorraine around the year 0582. The family owned vast domains between the Mosel and Meuse rivers. As an adolescent, he was called to the Merovingian court of King Theudegeert II of Austrasia where he was educated by Gondulf of Provence. He gave distinguished service as a military commander and in the civil administration. He had six provinces under his care at one time in his career.

In 751, Pepin and Bertrada became King and Queen of the Franks, following Pepin’s successful coup against the Frankish Merovingian monarchs. After Pepin’s death in 768, Bertrada lost her title as Queen of the Franks. (Charlemagne and Carloman inherited the two halves of Pepin’s kingdom.) Bertrada stayed at the court and often tried to stop arguments between the two brothers. Some historians credit Bertrada’s support for her elder son Charlemagne over her younger son Carloman and her diplomatic skills for Charlemagne’s early success. Although her influence over Charlemagne may have diminished in time, she lived at his court, and, according to Einhard, their relationship was excellent. Bertrada recommended that Charlemagne set aside his legal wife, Himiltrude, and marry Desiderata, a daughter of the Lombard king Desiderius. He did so (but soon divorced and married Hildegarde). Einhard claims this was the only episode that ever strained relations between mother and son.

The first nuns came from Nivelles and introduced Irish monastic customs. Begga’s remains are preserved at Andenne; her vita was written in the late 11th century. She is invoked for the cure of hernias and of infants’ diseases.

The wife of Arnulf van Metz was DODA….. She was born ca 0584….. Her father is not identified….. Her mother is not identified…..She married Arnulf van Metz ca 0596…..Her death date is not documented.

The following is According to the Saga of the Kings of Norway (Heimskringla) (edited):

….When Olof heard about the death of his father, he gathered the men who were ready to follow him and went to his parents in Nerike , because after the atrocities of his father, the Swedes had become hostile to the Ynglings.

When the Swedes learned that Olof and his family had sought refuge in the Nerike, they were attacked and had to reach the west through the deep, mountainous forests (Kilsbergen ) to Lake Vänern and the Klarälven estuary (where Karlstad is located today). They settled there and cleared land. They quickly created a whole province called Värmland , where they could build a good life.

When the Swedes learned that Olof was clearing land, they amused themselves by calling him the Tree Harvester. Olof married a woman named Solveig, who was a daughter of Halfdan Guldtand of the Kingdom of Solør . Olof and Solveig had two sons, Ingjald Olofsson and Halfdan Hvitbeinn , who were sent to the kingdom of Solør , in his mother’s uncle’s house.

Due to King Ivar Vidfamne , many Swedes emigrated to Värmland , and they became so numerous that the province could not stand it. This land was hit by famine, of which the Swedes accused the king. It was an old tradition in Sweden to hold the king accountable for the wealth of the land (see Domalde). The Swedes accused Olof of neglecting his sacrifices to the gods and believed that this was the cause of the famine. The Swedish settlers rebelled against Olof, besieged his house on the shores of Lake Vänern and burned it inside. This is how he was sacrificed to Odin , like his ancestor Domalde

The mother of Cunegonde de France de Gand was ERMENTRUDE ….. Title: Princess of France …..  She was born ca 0875 ….. Her father was Louis II le Bec de France ….. Her mother was Adelaide de Paris ….. She married Evrard de Sulichgau

Ermentrude was a daughter of King Louis the Stammerer and his second wife, Queen Adelaide of Paris, whom he married in February 0875 with official sanction.

After the death of Louis, the struggle for power in the kingdom probably led to Ermentrude’s marriage to someone for whom records are scant, whereas usually the marriage of daughter of a king is to a well known noble. (Other records indicate she married Evrard de Sulichgau)

The mother of Ermentrude was ADELAIDE de PARIS ….. Title: Queen Consort ….. She was born ca 0850 …..  Her father was Adalard, 8th Count Paris and Count Palatine ….. Her mother may have been Alphaide of the Holy Roman Empire ….. She married King Louis II le Bec de France  in February 0875…..  She died on November 10, 0901 at Laon and is buried in the Abbey of Saint-Corneille, Compiegne, Picardy

Adelaide was the daughter of the count palatine Adalard of Paris. She was chosen by Charles the Bald, King of Western Francia, to marry his son and heir, Louis the Stammerer, despite the fact that Louis had secretly married Ansgarde of Burgundy against the wishes of his father. Although Louis and Ansgarde already had two children, (Louis and Carloman), Charles prevailed upon Pope John VIII, to dissolve the union. This accomplished, Charles married his son to Adelaide in February 875.

However, the marriage was called into question because of the close blood-kinship of the pair. When on 7 September 0878 the pope crowned Louis (who had succeeded his father in the previous year), the pope refused to crown Adelaide.

When Louis the Stammerer died in Compiegne on 10 April 0879, Adelaide was pregnant, giving birth on 17 September 0879, to Charles the Simple. The birth of this child led to a dispute between Adelaide and Ansgarde. Ansgarde and her sons accused Adelaide of adultery. Adelaide in turn disputed the right of Ansgarde’s sons to inherit. Eventually, Adelaide succeeded in winning the case

The mother of Adelaide of Paris is unknown

OUR NEWBERRY FAMILY: From Bernard ‘the Dane’ to Samuel Newberry

BERNARD de HARCOURT, called ‘Bernard the Dane’is believed to be our earliest identifiable ancestor. He was born ca AD 880 in Denmark. He married Sprote de Bourgogne, a princess of Burgundy. He was deceased by AD 960.

Edited from Wikipedia: BERNARD THE DANE was a Viking jarl (earl) of Danish Origins. He had put himself in the service of another jarl (Rollo) by the year 911. Bernard converted to Christianity at Rouen ca 912 and shortly afterward received from Rollo the county of Pont-Audemer in Roumois which later became the city of Harcourt.

Edited from The Beaumonts in History AD 850-1850: The history begins with Bernard surnamed the Dane, born about the middle of the ninth and died in the second quarter of the following century. He was a descendant of’ one of the Kings of Denmark and a near kinsman, possibly a, brother or son of Rollo, or possibly he may have been an outlaw from the West coast of Norway. (ergo no prior history)

Bernard was second in command of the expedition into France and when Rollo divided up the new Duchy amongst his chieftains; Bernard received as his share the Lordship of Harcourt, together with a large tract of country lying between the rivers Sarthe and Rille in the province of Maine.

After the deathof Rollo, Bernard became Regent and chief councillor of Rollo’s son William “Longsword” and subsequently guardian of his grandson during his minority. He married  Sprote de Burgundie ca 0912, a lady of the royal house of Burgundy. They had at least one child, a son they named,’ TORF’

(See the separate entry titled Sprote de Bourgogne for her family history)

TORF de HARCOURT (also known as Torf the Rich) was born ca 0920 in France. He died ca 1010 at Pont Audemer in Normandy. He married  Ertemberge de Brioquibec ca 938

TORF was a great Norman feudal baron. Torf possessed numerous lordships in Normandy. It has been suggested that he was a son of Bernard the Dane, the most powerful of the feudal nobles of Normandy during the reign of Duke William I (b. 927 – d. 943) and Regent during the minority of Duke Richard I (b. 943 – d. 955); but this claim has not been proved. (from Tudor Place.com) He married ERTEMBERGE de BRIOQUIBEC ca 938. They had at least three children, including Thorold de Pont Audemer de Harcourt born ca 950

See the separate entry titled Ertemberge de Brioquibec for her family history

THOROLD/TOUROUDE de HARCOURT, Sire de Pont Audemer was born ca 950 at Tours, Indre-et-Loire in Centre France. He married Wevia Duceline de Crepon. He may have died as late as 1040 at Preaux.

By inheritance from his father, Thorold was Seigneur du Pontautorf, de Torville, Torcy, Torny, and Torly, and became Sire de Pont-Audemer which became his principle residence and by which he was commonly known. By his marriage he enhanced his position in Norman nobility, and became a prominent figure during the reigns of Richard II, Duke of NormandyRichard III, Duke of Normandy, and Robert I, Duke of Normandy (996-1035). He married Wevia de Crepon, a younger sister of Gunnora, the wife of Richard I of Normandy. Their children included Honfroi/Humphrey de Harcourt.

See the separate entry titled Wevia Duceline de Crepon for her family history.

HONFROI/HUMPHREY de HARCOURT was born ca 995 at Pont Audemer Normandy. He married Auberee de la Haye. He died on September 28, 1041 at Orne Basse Normandy

Humphrey (or HonfroyOnfroi or Umfridde Vieilles  was the first holder of the “grand honneur” of Beaumont-le-Roger, one of the most important groups of domains in eastern Normandy  and the founder of the House of Beaumont.

His early life and origins are the subject of much discussion. As reported by later Norman chronicler Robert of Torigni, he was son of Thorold de Pont-Audemer and grandson of Torf. His ancestry remains controversial. Whatever the truth, there is no doubt that Humphrey is descended from a Scandinavian family. (edited fromWikipedia)

Humphrey restored the monastery at Préaux, a few kilometres from Pont-Audemer in 1034. He also held Bernay Abbey. By contrast, the possessions around Pont-Audemer were inherited from his ancestors.

During the minority of Duke William the BastardRoger I of Tosny, holder of the “honneur” of Conches, attacked Humphrey’s domains. But around 1040, Humphrey’s son, Roger de Beaumont, met and defeated Roger in battle, during which Roger of Tosny was killed. (Note that one of the later wives descended from Roger of Tosny). He married  AUBEREE  de la HAYE Five children are noted for the couple, including Roger de Beaumont.

See the separate article titled Auberee de la Haye for her family history.

ROGER DE BEAUMONT-LE-ROGER was born ca 1022 at Pont Audemer Normandy. He married Adeline de Meulan ca 1040. He died ca 1094 at Abbey Preaux in Normandy.

Roger de Beaumont, a feudal lord of Beaumont-le-Roger and of Pont-Audemer in Normandy, was a powerful Norman nobleman and close advisor to William the Conqueror.

He was a son of Humphrey de Vieilles and Auberee de la Haye. Roger de Beaumont was thus a second cousin once removed of William the Conqueror. His Norman feudal lordship had its caput and castle at Beaumont-le-Roger, a settlement situated on the upper reaches of the River Risle, in Normandy. He was also feudal lord of Pont-Audemer, a settlement built around the first bridge to cross the River Risle.

Wace, the 12th-century historian, wrote that: “At the time of the invasion of England, Roger was summoned to the great council at Lillebonne, onaccount of his wisdom; but he did not join in the expedition as he was too faradvanced in years”.  Although Rogercould not fight, he did not hesitate in contributing a large share of the cost, and provided at his own expense sixty vessels for the conveyance of the troopsacross the channel. Furthermore, his eldest son and heir fought bravely at Hastings as noted in several contemporary records. As a result, Roger’s sons were rewarded generously with lands in England, and both eventually were madeEnglish earls by the sons of the Conqueror. He married Adeline de Meulan-Sur-Seine. They had at least nine children, including our Henri de Newberg de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Warwick

HENRI de NEUBOURG de BEAUMONT was born ca 1045 at Castle Neuborough in Normandy. He married Marguerite du Perche. He was the first English Earl Warwick. He died on June 20, 1119 at Abbey Preaux, Pont Audemer Normandy.

He was given by his father the modest lordship of Le Neubourg in central Normandy, near his father’s caput of Beaumont-le-Roger on the River Risle. He adopted surname de Neubourg which was later anglicised to “de Newburgh.

Little is in fact known of his career before 1088. However he took a leading role in reconciling (William) the Conqueror with his eldest son Robert Curthose in 1081 so he stood high in (his cousin), the Conqueror’s, favor. In 1088 he served a royal agent in the arrest and trial of the traitorous bishop of Durham, William de Saint-Calais.

He acquired the lordship of Gower in Wales around 1107 from the favor of King Henry I and built a castle at Swansea, which was unsuccessfully attacked by the Welsh in 1113. He also captured the Gower Peninsula in southwest Glamorgan. He or his barons built other castles at PenrhysLlanrhidian and Swansea in 1120, also at Oystermouth and Loughor. He married Marguerite du Perche. They had several children including our Robert deNeubourg.

(See the separate article titled Marguerite du Perche for her family history.)

ROBERT I DE NEUBOURG, Sir Knight was born ca 1100. He was an Anglo-Norman aristocrat. He married Godehildis de Toeni ca 1127. They had at least three children, including our Roger de Neubourg.

Sir Robert, the fourth son of Henry de Beaumont, 1st Earl of Warwick, inherited his father’s Normandy lands. He held Neubourg as Comte de Meulan. He was Sire du Ponte Audemer and acquired other lands at Winfrith in Dorsetshire, England as well. He took part in the Norman rebellion of 1118–1119, against Henry I of England, around William Clito. The immediate issue was a conflict with his feudal overlord (and benefactor) Waleran. He rebelled for a short time only, during which time he was burnt out of Neubourg. It was only in the early 1140s that Robert and Waleran resolved their difficulties formally. He later served as steward, justiciar and seneschal of Normandy under Henry II of England.

In 1172, Roger de Newburgh and his wife, Matilda de Glastonia founded the Cistercian Abbey of Bindon in Dorsetshire, which they endowed with lands, as shown by their charter of that year. The abbey then sometimes called Great Bidon moved to this new location near Wool village.  Matilda’s grandfather, William de Glastonia had contemplated and took steps toward founding Bindon Abby. His plans were carried out by his granddaughter and her husband who were considered the founders of Bidon Abbey.

ROBERT NEWBURGH was born ca 1175 and died ca 1231. He married and sired a son but the name of his wife remains a mystery. He died ca 1230/1231.

He was under age at the time of his father’s death about 1192, but on coming of age succeeded to the latter’s estates in Dorsetshire and also inherited lands from his mother.

On 24 March 1210, King John confirmed to Robert deNewburgh the grant made to his grandfather Robert de Newburgh by King Henry I of the manor of Winfrith with lands in Lullworth, etc., in Dorsetshire, said manor being held in capite [of the Crown] by the service of holding the basin of water and towel for the washing of the King’s hands on Christmas day. At a later period the time of this service was changed to the coronation day of each sovereign.

This manor and service continued in the Newburgh family for twelve generations, during aperiod of nearly four centuries, through the coronation of King Henry VIII in1509.  In 1515, on the death of Sir RogerNewburgh, Knight, the manor passed through an heiress out of the Newburgh name; but at later coronations this right of service was claimed by the lords of the manor to whom it had descended from the Newburghs. In 1217, Robert, son of Roger de Newburgh, granted by charter the manor of Woolaveston to Bindon Abbeywhere he was interred about 1230.

ROBERT de NEWBURGH, Lord of Poorstock was born ca 1200 at Winfrith in Dorsetshire England. He married Lucy (last name unknown) ca 1223 He died ca 1246.

“English Baronies” only shows one Robert, “successor” (to the barony) of Roger de Newburgh. In 1234, he paid a tax of 2 marks towards a grant to King Henry III on occasion of the marriage of the King’s sister Isabel. In 1242, he paid a fine of 30 marks to be released from going to Gascony in the service of King Henry III; and in 1246 he paid scutage of 15 pounds for fifteen knight’s fees.

Scutage is a medieval English tax levied on holders of a knight’s fee under the feudal land tenure of knight-service. Under feudalism the king, through his vassals, provided land to knights for their support. The knights owed the king military service in return. The knights were allowed to “buy out” of the military service by paying scutage.

Robert succeeded to the ancestral familyestates in Dorsetshire upon the death of his father about 1309. In 1322 he was one of the knights taken prisoner at the battle of Boroughbridge in a rebellion under the Earl of Lancaster against King Edward II. By his participation inthis rebellion, his estates became forfeited to the Crown; but he secured a pardon and restoration of his lands by payment of a fine of £100, taking an oath of allegiance to the King, and binding himself to serve the latter in hi swars; this service he performed in 1325 on a summons for an expedition into Gascony. In 1336 he deeded certain lands to his brother John de Newburgh; He died in 1338, his inquisition post mortem stated that his son and heir Thomas was twenty-three years old.
